Memorial Day

A lot went on here in Chattanooga for Memorial Day yesterday. I never really thought of it as a holiday before, since my family never did anything and I thought holidays were supposed to be rowdy times, preferably with chocolate. It seems to me to be the military version of Day of the Dead, which some people may consider a holiday, but I consider more of a spiritual day and a time to think. I didn’t have too much time to think yesterday, though. A road race in the morning and a Memorial Day service at about 11. I was coming off a four-day weekend, which gave me the energy to run up and down the hill in the National Cemetery, chasing Boy Scouts and Vietnam veterans. (The vets were easier to catch.)

Here are the images I came away with, on the TFP site. Below is the one that ran in the paper.

Bob Mason, a past commodore in the Marine Corps League and World War II veteran, salutes the American flag as it passes during the massing of colors at the beginning of the Memorial Day program at the Chattanooga National Cemetery on Monday.
