Two for the road

My roommate is almost completely packed; she leaves Friday morning. My father is coming on the 28th to take all my stuff back to Athens. I move in with a friend on the first. I feel lost in boxes, dirty clothes, about a million pens collected from local businesses, and old assignments from December….

Margarita

I seriously need a drink. Two, in fact, thank you.

The Mixed Berry Margarita at Blue Water Grille on Broad Street is made of 1800 Reposado tequila, Grand Marnier, sweet and sour, mixed fresh raspberries and strawberries and a squeeze of lime. It sells for $8.00. Superfruits, such as those in the Mixed Berry Margarita, are a dining trend for 2008. Shot on Monday, Dec. 31, 2007 at Blue Water Grille 224 Broad St., Chattanooga.

How can I be a student again? And wear a backpack?  After more than 6 months of learning on my feet (or on my knees on the pavement, or lying in the grass, or hanging from a jungle gym) I can’t imagine how anyone really learns anything sitting in a classroom. The best teacher is definitely experience, and all I can hope for is that my classes will be quick so I can pound the Argentine pavement as much as possible. And as fantastic a teacher and a person and a photojournalist as Mark is, there’s no way to truly learn how to see and learn how to be a journalist in a class. That’s what always bugged me about my writing classes: very few assignments out of the classroom. AND OY GEVALT! Writing anything formal that’s longer than a complaint letter to my senator gives me what one of my favorite people’s father calls “anal glaucoma.” — I can’t see my ass doing that. It’s just so…long. Newspapers and even magazines are great because they have limited space. But an essay is limited only to the number of trees you are willing to sacrifice in order to cite your sources in MLA format.

Ok, I’m not gone yet.

  • Be a student? Hell no.

I’d badger the Banner-Herald for freelance work constantly. I’m sure they’ll have people on vacation over the summer, leading up to football season…..
